Your description of the market sounds very much like
the Woodrock market in Munich. Was it held in several
connected tents?
Anyway, my impression of the stalls were mostly that
of semi professionals who tend to make a big deal out
of very little.
We used to sandblast rocks and slabs simply over a
thin rubbery foil, which had an adhesive back (which
again could be reinforced with a silicon rubber
solution painted directly onto the stone). You then
simply draw the design onto the foil and cut it out
with a scalpel.
This foil is so flexible that it is no problem at all
to wrap it over uneven surfaces.
If the foil is too expensive and you do not want to
sandblast too deeply try masking tape in two to three
layers crosswise. It is a bit tricky to cut but it
serves the general purpose. I have also experimented
with household paper glue. But this is suitable only
for very light blasting, preferrably with round
grained sand as you would use in sandblasting glas.
Thinking about it now, I wouldn't be surprised at all
if it would work with silikon rubber applied directly
onto stone and left a while to settle.
