Richard, Interesting thoughts on carving.
My personal thoughts are that though Stonecarving is not considered
'sexy' at the moment in the contemporary art world it is of little
consequence. Since the act of carving strips away any pretentions of the
mantra that all work must be new and like no other.
The bottom line is that stonecarving demands a very personal response as
a human being and it does tend to knock the bullshit out of you,hence
there is a thread of humanity which can seem self referential
