In a story or novel anything can be romantic, that's why
it's a story or novel. But in the real world stone
carving to me is an expression of me and all that I am.

Do we mind whether what we carve is romantic or not? I
think not, as long as we do it and show it, whether to
our friends or in a gallery.
The stone will always be a carrier for our vision or
'form' as you call it. It's other people that label it
romantic or the like because they read into it what they
want, not what we see.
It is my belief that all carving should be done on a
particular stone to compliment the image or the image to
compliment the stone. We cannot always get Carrara
marble, especially if you live in New Zealand as I.
I myself carve directly into my stone rather than from a
model.I am self taught so my techniques are my own.
My theory is don't intellectualise it to much, just get
on and do it and as far as experimentation in the stone
goes, every new image is an experimentation from every
artist.
