In response to your request for help on relief carving I
have the following suggestions for you.
1. use a 2" or better gage slab for your sub base. Apply
a thin layer of plaster into which you set the
carving piece . Now you got your self a sturdy
reinforcement which is able to absorb vibration and
shock from your mallet/ air tool.
2. Use a rubber or wood mallet for the hand work this
further dampens the impact of your strokes . This
method is typical for the marble /lime stone carving.
Do not try to work your piece in sand . This is
guarantied to fail since the marble will travel on
this sub base. Sand sub bases do however have its
place in a different application.
3. SHARP TOOLS ONLY !!!!!!! How sharp do people ask me
often. Well if you can slice into wood its perfect.
Use a green wheel to sharpen carbide tipped tools.
