No, they are very similar. On occasion companies have marketed Indiana
stone in the UK as a substitute for Portland, and vice versa. There are
much larger supplies of Indiana stone, and in general better qualities and
consistancy are available; although, as I mentioned, the past year or two
have been more difficult. Greatly increased demand has put stress on the
supply chain - from what I hear the quarries didn't gear up to meet the
current demand, so most stone mills I've spoken to have complained that
they aren't getting the quantity and quality they want, and deliveries are
taking longer.
As to another question about Utah stone sources, I don't have any info
handy; I've heard more in the past few years about alabaster from Utah, in
particular from Kanab.
