I have seen large marble blocks being split by the method described below,
I've done it myself, and I don't see why it shouldn't work with granite.
The splitting involves the use of wedges driven into holes drilled into the
stone.
The wedges consist of� two L-shaped pieces of steel. They are inserted into
the hole with the long side of the L in, such that the short sides point
outward in opposite directions. Into the space between the L-pieces a solid
somewhat pointed steel rod is driven by heavy blows with a sledgehammer.
The holes form a line along which the rock is supposed to split. You need
about 4-6 holes, equally spaced, the depth being roughly the distance
between them. Obviously the holes need to be on the same plane, which can be
tricky. You need one wedge per hole, and you drive them in one after the
other, and repeating until the stone spilts.
