I use a Bosh hammerdrill which only takes sds type bits. That means (I
think) super density steel. The bits are carbide tipped. Mine is the
smallest drill Bosh makes that uses sds bits. A hammer drill is the only
tool I use to split granite boulders.
I assume from you questions that you want to split stone . If so , than
you must match the bit size with the wedge size. The supplier can tell you
what size to use. The general rule about hole depth is that the deeper you
go, the more accurate the break. If you know your material you can get away
with holes an inch deeper than the wedge, if you are working with the grain.
When dealing with an unknow boulder, ????.
Slicing granite requires a big diamond saw. I use a dry cut diamond saw
blade that screwes onto a big electric grinder. Granite city tool co. has
blades for granite or marble.
