Dear Kit,
I'm assuming that you are a novice in sculpture, but have great desire!
I tell people who want to learn to carve stone that the best way to start is
find a class at a university or place that offers classes. It is easier and
faster (and a lot of fun) when you are with a group that is working
together.
In general, in or out of a class, drawing is where you start, especially if
your interest is in figurative realistic art. Do work in clay and plaster
of paris. Start carving with an easy material like Indiana Limestone,
alabaster and soapstone. You will know when your ready for the harder
stones!
Start simple, and do all these things together. They all go together and
are esential elements to doing sculpture.
You have much to learn , so read everything you can find, look at sculpture
tool catalogs. They often have books that tell you how.
