Thanks for the responses to my questions.
I went ahead and bought a used reciprocating saw, fitted
it out with a 12" blade, and was extremely pleased with
the result on a large chunk of my hardest alabaster.
Instead of the 45 minutes it would have taken me to saw
that piece in half by hand, it took only 6 minutes on
the saw's lower speed setting.
The saw was very easy to control, threw no more dust
into the air than a hand saw, isn't terribly noisy, and
doesn't give me the feeling I'm about to cut off some
crucial part of my anatomy (like my die grinder does)
You can even get scroll blades for it, so I can envision
being able to totally block out a larger sculpture with
the thing. I highly recommend this type of saw!
