Okanagan/Thompson International Sculpture Symposium
Society will be hosting the Sculpture Symposium in 2002.
The budget for the Symposium is estimated to be 1.7
Million dollars.
The Okanagan/Thompson Symposium will be a natural
continuation of the 1975 stone symposium held in Van
Dusen Gardens in Vancouver, B.C. This was an extremely
successful event that averaged over 300 spectators a day
for the three-month event, involving 15 sculptors from
around the world.
The aims and objectives of the Symposium:
To build the awareness of the arts with the general
public, educational institutions as well as the business
community through an international event;
To build partnerships and alliances within the region to
support the cultural industry which would result in
creating jobs throughout the Interior.
The symposium will consist of three tiers representing a
wide diversity of cultural influences.
Tier One will consist of 15 Canadian sculptors, of which
six will be invited artists, and the remaining nine
artists selected by the symposium adjudicators.
Tier Two will consist of 10 International sculptors, of
which three will be invited artists, and the remaining
seven artists selected by the symposium adjudicators.
Artists in Tiers One and Two will be commissioned to
create one monumental sculptural piece in any permanent
medium. The completed sculptures will remain in the
region as part of the region�s public art collection.
Tier Three will include approximately 80
non-commissioned fully participating Sculptors and will
focus on local and other artists also wanting to be
involved in the Symposium. Artists in this tier will be
responsible for their own costs. These artists will have
the opportunity to sell their work during the Symposium
in order to help recover their costs.
We extend a special invitation to Indigenous Peoples.
All Sculptors will create permanent sculptures on-site
and the public will be invited to view the work in
progress. Also for the 2002 Symposium, webcams will be
placed on the various venues, allowing the world to view
the ongoing process from a dedicated web site.
Several Communities in the Okanagan/Thompson Region
including Kelowna, Kamloops and Summerland are already
participating in the development of the Symposium.
In conjunction with the International Sculpture
Symposium, the first completed survey of Canadian
Sculpture will be undertaken and published by four major
B.C. interior galleries under the direction of Dr.
Robert Belton, Associate Dean of Arts, Okanagan
University College. During the Symposium, the Okanagan
University College will be asked to host an
International Sculptor�s Conference, making this truly
an extraordinary International event.

All works must be completed in a permanent sculptural
medium with the exemption of resins.
The committee chair and initiator of the project is
sculptor Jock Hildebrand, he is presently the President
of the Kelowna and District Arts Council. Mr. Hildebrand
is a professional sculptor and painter who maintains his

Symposium Structure:
The Symposium is a three tier structure:
Tier #1 Canadian Artists: Five (5) Invited Commissioned
Artists (based on recognition, reputation and C.V.) Ten
(10) Adjudicated Commissioned Artists
Tier #2 International Artists: Three (3) Invited
Commissioned Artists (based on recognition, reputation
and C.V.) Seven (7) Adjudicated Commissioned Artists
Adjudication:
Adjudication will be the responsibility of the Symposium
Adjudicating Committee
Commissioned Work:
Will be based on time frame and materials used; Will be
paid to a maximum of $50,000 per artist and paid on
verified expenses;
Acquisition of all supplies will be the responsibility
of the artist;
Traveling costs are the responsibility of the artist;
Accommodations will be the responsibility of the artist,
but the Symposium will try to provide either billeting
or low cost accommodations close to the work sites;
All works become the possession of either the Symposium
or the Donor Community.
Tier #3 Local and Other Artists:
1. Local community will determine entrance fee
2. Will be non-commissioned work unless locally involved
communities provide otherwise.
3. Adjudication will be the responsibility of each
community for its artists.
Non-Commissioned Work:
1. All supplies and equipment will be the responsibility
of the artist unless Symposium has had materials donated
for the cause.
2. Traveling costs are the responsibility of the artist
3.Accommodations will be the responsibility of the
artist, but the symposium will try to provide either
billeting or low cost accommodations close to the
work-site.
4.Work can be sold after the close of the Symposium and
money from the sale will go directly to the artist.

Size of Work:
Monumental size should be based on:
a) the Artist�s impression of what monumental is;
b) the commission fees;
c) the materials used.
