Czech Defense Minister Would Consider Resignation if Army Budget Were Cut PRAGUE, Jun 20, 2001 -- (CTK - Czech News Agency) Defense Minister Jaroslav Tvrdik would consider resigning if the Finance Ministry's proposal that defense spending be reduced from 2.2 percent of GDP to 1.86 percent were put into effect, Tvrdik said in an interview in today's edition of the daily Super. "Those figures really exist. They are contained in the first provisional budget proposal, which we have received from the Finance Ministry," said Tvrdik, adding that he thought he could manage to persuade his government colleagues to meet their foreign commitments and not reduce the budget. Tvrdik said he and Finance Minister Jiri Rusnok were friends. Furthermore he said that he felt that he could count on the support of Premier Milos Zeman and Social Democratic Party (CSSD) leader Vladimir Spidla. All ministers, however, will be his opponents, as all ministries are expecting budget cuts, he added. Tvrdik said that though he respected the government's priorities, he also agree with the opinion of NATO Secretary General George Robertson, who said on a recent visit to Prague that the Czech Republic, prior to joining the EU, had to fulfill all its obligations to NATO.
