[In Croatia, an EU and NATO candidate in good
standing, a campaign of terror against the Roma
minority goes on unimpeded by government authorities.
But in Yugoslavia-Serbia over the past decade, branded
an alleged human rights violator by Croatia's NATO
sponsors, hundreds of thousands of Roma have fled
there for protection from persecution - and death - in
Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo and elsewhere.
As with all official Western reporting about the
Balkans over the last ten years, reverse what you read
and you won't be far from the truth.]

1 Gypsy Dies in Attack in Croatia
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- One man died and a woman was
badly injured Sunday in a bomb attack on a Gypsy
family in the coastal city of Pula, the Interior
Ministry said.
Ramadan Gusani, 59, died in the explosion. His wife
Marija Gusani, 58, was badly injured.
The millions of Gypsies -- or Roma -- across central
and eastern Europe are the frequent targets of racist
attacks in Croatia. Police speculated the attack was
the work of skinheads, who have been linked to similar
assaults in the city.
''We were awake until 2 a.m. when we heard a car stop
in front of the house. A window was broken, and then
the bomb exploded,'' a cousin of Gusani told the daily
Jutarnji list.
''We have lived in Pula more than 40 years, and we all
have jobs and our kids are good pupils,'' she added,
reflecting the exasperation of Roma who are attacked
for no reason other than their skin color. The
newspaper did not identify the woman by name.
None of the eight children sleeping in another room in
the house were hurt.
The bombing was the latest of a series of recent
attacks on Roma by skinheads in Pula. Several children
have been beaten and a hand grenade exploded in a Roma
settlement on Monday, but no one was injured. Other
Roma families have received bomb threats.
