[That the word peace could be used in reference to, or
even in the same article as, the name of former NATO
warplanner Javier Solana is a travesty and further
indictment of what passes for a "free" press in the
West.]

Macedonians buzz peace plane
By Christian Jennings, near Aracinovo, Macedonia

IN a remarkable display of defiance against the
European Union's peacemaking efforts, a Macedonian air
force jet buzzed the aircraft carrying Javier Solana,
the EU's head of foreign policy, as it landed at
Skopje airport yesterday.

Threatening: a Sukhoi SU-25 ground-attack jet
A Sukhoi SU-25 ground-attack jet swooped low over Mr
Solana's aircraft in a threatening gesture as it came
to rest on the tarmac. Mr Solana, in charge of the
EU's foreign policy, had arrived at the head of a
mission trying to broker a last-minute peace agreement
before Macedonian army and Albanian guerrilla factions
return to all-out war.
As the aircraft carrying the EU delegation landed,
Macedonia's army and police pounded the rebel-held
town of Aracinovo, three miles from the edge of the
capital, with huge bombardments for the second day
running.
While Nato and the EU called on forces to cease
fighting to give peace talks a chance, columns of
smoke from burning houses blackened the sky over
Aracinovo. Tanks and artillery bombarded positions
held by ethnic Albanian rebels from the self-styled
National Liberation Army who moved into positions on
the outskirts of Macedonia's capital two weeks ago.
Macedonian police troops, held back by rebel mortar
and machine-gun fire, were desperately trying to fight
their way into the outskirts of the town yesterday.
Western diplomats and international observers feared
that although Macedonia's fragile coalition government
might continue to discuss its support for an
internationally backed peace plan, the army and police
are now determined to act independently to flush the
rebels out of a dozen villages they hold across 150
square miles of northern Macedonia.
