According to the newspaper Dnevnik (#1584, June 23/24, 2001), Manneti claimed that he did not know about them until yesterday. [The WHO representative Manneti. (C) Channel 5, Skopje, Macedonia] This is a very sensitive issue, because the general feeling of the Macedonian public is that many humanitarian organizations and the international big media are biased in favor of the Albanian nationalist interests. Providing aid to and reporting only about ethnic Albanian refugees helps the cause of the Albanian nationalists who try to promote the thesis that their compatriots are the only victims of the war. Non-Albanians think that this image of being a victim is then misused to gain support in the West and as a cover up or even an excuse for Albanian terrorist atrocities. Macedonian public witnessed a similar development in Kosovo, which is now almost totally "ethnically cleansed" from all non-Albanians. Questionable map-making skills? Another detail in the Manneti case draw the attention of the press. His book DecentraliSed Co-Operation: A New Tool for Conflict Situations (The experience of WHO in Bosnia and Herzegovina: a case study), published in 1999, included a map of the region depicting Macedonia as part of Albania! [Portions of Manneti's book as shown on TV. Unfortunately, the maps are quite unintelligible. (c) Channel 5, Skopje, Macedonia ] In a TV interview, Manneti claimed that omitting to draw the border separating these two countries (Albania and Macedonia) was just "a technical mistake." Blast from the past The combination of Manneti's omissions and background, make the inhabitants of Macedonia feel threatened and uneasy. He comes from a NATO country, which, besides verbal denunciations, has not done much to counter the secession efforts of the Albanian nationalists in the Balkans (in fact NATO provided immense support to KLA). More ever, that country is Italy, which comes with its own set of associations. Namely, in 1939, Mussolini's regime made Albania a satellite state to (then) fascist Italy. In 1941, Nazi Germany and fascist Italy gave its ally Albania parts of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Greece as a reward for its loyal service, thus making "the Great Albania." As was the case with all fascist countries, Albania suffered defeat in World War II, while the natives of the annexed territories liberated themselves through armed struggle. The people's opponents were Italian and German army, but also the Albanian paramilitaries (Bali Kombtar), notorious for ravaging and burning of ethnic Macedonian villages. [The dream of Great Albania, supported by Mussolini and Hitler, has been a nightmare for the people of the Balkans since World War II.] That was 55 years ago. In the meantime, Albanian nationalists did not give up the plan to conquer all the desired territories - but now under the pretense that they fight for the "ethnic rights" of the Albanians who live there. Since that struggle is lead by clan militias and partly funded by the Albanian mafia (which controls about 70% of the illegal drug market in some European countries), it is most likely that its end result tends to be a chaotic country akin to Afghanistan (minus the enforcing of religious laws of the ruling Talibans), or... today's Kosovo, where more people seem to have died from gang violence than from the horrendous war two years ago. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The images on the cover page of Manneti's book are taken from the groundbreaking collection of photographs "Human and Animal Locomotion" by Eadward Muybridge. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REALITY MACEDONIA Images on this page are property of the TV stations and were supplied through screen capturing by Vasil Buraliev. Please help the Police and the Army of Republic of Macedonia protect its diversity, democratic values, and the lives of innocent people threatened by the KLA terrorists by continuing the Macedonian tradition of tolerance. Please do not vent your frustration, anger, and pain on your neighbors just because they speak the same language as the KLA criminals. Ordinary citizens of Macedonia belonging to all its ethnic groups (Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Rroma, Serbs, Bosnians, and others) all share the same problems, same joys, just like they share the same sun and stomp the same ground.
