[The Macedonian government better not defend itself,
or its people, for risk of ending up in the Hague. The
precedent has been established. But if the current
Reichstag Fire Trial II ends in an acquittal as the
first did, then another sort of precedent will be
achieved.]

Overnight Clashes in Macedonia, Army Says

SKOPJE, Jul 3, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) Numerous
clashes were reported overnight between Macedonian
forces and ethnic Albanian guerrillas, notably in the
north of the country, the army said Tuesday.

At around midnight (2200 GMT Monday), the rebels
attacked a police post in Opaje, near Slupcane, their
stronghold since early May, army spokesman Blagoja
Markovski said.

"We have responded in an appropriate manner," he said,
without giving any details. He reported a 30-minute
exchange of fire in the area near the northern town of
Kumanovo.

Meanwhile in the northwestern town of Tetovo,
automatic weapons fire was heard from the villages of
Gajre and Sipkovica, but the shooting was too "minor"
to provoke a response from Macedonian forces, he said.

Shots were also heard from Nikustak, a village
situated to the west.

On Monday, clashes were reported around the village of
Radusa in the north, between Skopje and Tetovo, for
more than three hours.

The guerrillas of the National Liberation army (NLA)
had taken positions there for several days, with
violent clashes been registered in the area after a
week of uneasy cease-fire.

The army said suspected NLA fighters opened fire
Sunday on army positions at Kale, a ruined Turkish
fortress on the heights above the northwestern town of
Tetevo, killing one soldier.

More than 30 soldiers and police have been killed in
the conflict. ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)
