I gather that at least some Qlogic FC adaptors can function as target as well as initiator. (from something I saw at openfiler.com, I think)
This suggests to me that from a hardware standpoint, nothing would preclude a SATA JBOD running (Open)Solaris, and serving out zfs logical volumes (out of zpools of suitable redundancy) over the Fibre Channel. Is there any prospect of a driver and daemon that could support such an arrangement? After all, if Sun's server and storage units are merging, why not consider a relatively low power and cost SAN storage server? Or is iSCSI likely to be the way to go, given 10Gb Ethernet, lower-cost networking hardware, and more familiar network management?
