A couple of things:
1) If the target does not allow you write into sector 0, then it should not be 
mapping that sector to be available. Most RAID systems store configuration info 
on their drives, they just do not map those areas as user accessible blocks.....

2) We have, in the past, had arrays that spoofed their CHS geometry to fit 
within the legacy 16-bit cylinder limit....The current arrays do not...
The older arrays ensured that what was advertised as a cylinder started on the 
beginning of a RAID stripe for performance reasons...
