OK, I'm now very confused.

If I create a new text document in Vista (test.txt), I can copy that OK over 
CIFS, whether read-only is set or not.  If I cut+paste the contents of this 
file from the case that is failing, the file will only copy when not set to 
read-only!

It get's worse:

If the file I create is >1023 bytes and read-only it fails; i.e. it breaks when 
the file is 1024 bytes and larger when read-only attribute is set!  :-(
