What is "it" here? ls(1)? If 'ls -l' shows numbers instead of names it's because getpwuid(3C) and getgrgid(3C) calls failed to resolve those UIDs and GIDs to user and group names. Which leads to the question: what's in /etc/nsswitch.conf for "passwd" and "group"?
