Hi guys,

I've spent the last month engrossing myself in OpenSolaris and I'm incredibly
excited by the storage projects. I am tasked with building a single storage
device composed of multiple 16-disk servers and presenting this as a single SAN
over InfiniBand.

This has come about since these are left over bits from another project...

So, I have 6 storage cases, each with a SuperMicro mb, dual 4-core xeons and
16GB ram. Each also has 16 300GB 15K rpm dual-path SAS hard drives. I have
access to a large number (>20!) of LSI MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP cards. I also have
2 Voltaire 96 port ISR-2004 InfiniBand switches and associated cabling and a
large stack of boxed mellanox ConnectX InfiniBand cards.

To be honest, I feel overwhelmed with choices, none of which I undestand
sufficiently well to make a design decision. Just what is the best way to
connect all this together to deliver the best read/write performance with
redundancy? The SAN is to support SQL Server databases and virtual machine
images.

What I would like to avoid is ZFS on one box being presented by a block device
that is in fact ZFS on a second box and then presenting this as a block device
to a Windows Server!

Views, comments, design ideas all very gratefully received!

Regards

CC
