Hey Ross, thanks for the tips and advice: It sounds like ZFS is still having some "growing pains" as it matures in power. -I do like the 5805 specs, and its cheaper tham Areca - but they are both great controllers, and like you mentioned, -nuthin' wrong with having hardware raid if you need it. I've decided to set my sights a little lower just for now. :) I need to more comfortably understand OpenSolaris/ZFS and actually, I'm impressed with the way OS/zfs runs on my little Asus M2N-E MB and the AMD dual-core 64. wow!,..., pkg update-image, zpool create... I'm definitely impressed, not to mention having a blast. and ya, I was a little premature in thinkin' just "anything" could replace our NetApps' with their simple magic of FreeBSD/Sun's NFS and the "power in numbers" -their sheer number of spindles ! But their day is comin' to as they near new crossroads', thanks to OpenStorage/Solaris and ZFS making their way into the smaller, and even mid markets to start.
thanks again, Rick. This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ storage-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/storage-discuss
