Hi, I've had a 8x1tb raidz2 setup now for some time, first one of the jmicron ports would randomly drop out and the drive was no longer available, then i tried various linux distro's as xen dom0's and solaris in a domu and ive now finally given in to being cheap and brought a .... cheap sil3114 4 port sata card and stoped using the IDE/jmicron completely, this has stoped the random freezing issues that i was having no matter how i had it set up, ass well as allowed me to run solaris with all the drives plugged in and running fine... however! :D
The current board i have and am using is a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P, this has 2x realtek LAN's which while the speed is great randomly drop out and stop working completely till i reboot, i found the bug about it and threads with other people having the same problems and i tried the disablechksum (i think it was) and this worked great till the other day when the network dropped out again but hasn't happened since. After rebooting there was another freeze but it was different to what i used to get, when it used to freeze it the disk activity light would be stuck on every single time. So i ignored this and updated to the latest snv which is 123 now (was using 122). Now the advice im looking for is if i should, instead of buying an intel gigabit nic, buy one of these boards. Intel dg43nb/dp43tf, one has onboard video and 2 dimms, other has no onboard video and 4 dimms. They both have onboard intel network, 3xpci 3xpcie 1xpcie16. Neither of them seem to as far as i can tell have any jmicron, marvell or realtek chips, (aside from sound which will be disabled anyway as its headless and just serves files). Now i know that Intel/Sun have apparently been working together for some time now to improve support, so im thinking an all Intel system is the way to go however neither of these boards are on the HCL, could anyone give me any information on either of these boards running with solaris or if there is another board that is maybe even better. At the moment im running OpenSolaris snv123, xen hypervisor, centos 5.3 domu, 4gb non-ecc memory (i would prefer ecc if possible), 1xsil3114 PCI card and looking to add more to the PCI/PCIe slots, 8x1tb drives and want to add more later. Any help on making my file server 100% supported and stable without spending a lot of money would be much appreciated thanks.
