There's a check carried out in the /etc/init.d/kdm script that uses a
program called parse-xf86config (in /usr/sbin/) which doesn't exist, at
least not after the upgrade. The upshot is that kdm isn't invoked on
boot-up because the xserver can't be checked. Running kdm from the
command line will work, though.
I fixed the problem by commenting out a line in
/etc/X11/kdm/kdm.options; i.e. I
changed 'check-local-xserver' to '#check-local-xserver'.
Not exactly an elegant solution....
