Your trusty 15" monitor will not do 1280x1024. It might to 1024x768 though.
You need the manual for your monitor to do anything wrt setting up X.

First, install the VGA16 xserver. then install XF86Setup. run XF86Setup as
root and you're all set. the interface is pretty straight forward. the only
gotcha is with the mouse setup on Storm. You want to choose busmouse and
/dev/gpmdata as the device. Use the kbd arrow and tab keys to move around
that screen to make the settings and then Apply. After that you can use the
mouse to choose other settings for your monitor.

Concise Guide to XFree86 for Linux (Que) might help here. There are many
books to choose from. Also look at Running Linux, 3rd Edition (O'Reilly).
