Well,what exactly is he trying to accomplish?I mean there should be a
reason for the network.What is he trying to share?Files,internet
connection ? What security level is desired?Does he have a hub or he
want to use a crossover cable(one
computer have to be dualhomed in this case).

Answers:
Simple file and internet sharing, yes there is a hub. Both machines are running
linux. Security is not a danger, but it should not be
ignored (typical security for an average home-user).
