Another option would be to make xfce the default windowmanager.There is
a command (update-alternatives ,see the man page) to do that but
basically you can just change the symlink
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager to point to /usr/X11R6/bin/xfce (or
wherever the binary is) and then choose debian session from gdm .
