It is a perl client, but have you tried Pronto? It's uses perl::GTK bindings
for the UI and is quite fast. MySQL is used on the backend to store email,
or you can use CSV which is slow. Pronto is great, it has a small footprint
and is quite fast.
I'm doing a major article on GUI mail clients for Max. Linux, but the
article won't be out for a while.
You also don't mention for what UI you want, KDE or Gnome. You might try
Balsa (gnome) or Magellan (KDE).
