Do you have the proper format for the XF86Config file for use by X4? The
upgrade to X4 does not do this for you. You must either run the xf86config
util for X4 or edit the file yourself (much easier now).

I wrote an article on XFree86 4.0 for Maximum Linux. It's online on their
site now. http://www.maximumlinux.com/howtos/howto/2000_07/

HTH. Let me know if it doesn't help.

Thanks Carl,

It looks as though I should have said yes to installing a new XF86Config when I was installing
the upgrade. Your Howto is very helpful. I now understand why X doesn't start, but I don't have
xf86config or XFree86-configure to get the ball rolling again.

I do have xf86setup but it doesn't allow me select the mouse, so I don't know whether it is for
version 3 or 4. There still seems to be a lot of v3 stuff present.

Perhaps you could email me a generic XF86Config that I can alter to fit. I'm having to use win to
communicate, so I can't download anything else to Linux until I get X working again.

In answer to Mircea's questions, I downloaded debs from:
http:www.edlug.ed.ac.uk/Mirrors/Debian/dists potato cpbotha/all/
http:www.edlug.ed.ac.uk/Mirrors/Debian/dists potato cpbotha/i386/
(all 48 Mb)
I am running Storm Hail & KDE 2.01  both apt-get dist-upgraded to the latest as of yesterday.

/var/log/messages & auth.log tell me that we couldn't authenticate root.
/root/.xsession-errors tells me that x didn't start
