So after you get the XF86Config file you have the fix for gdm and root
in my
previous mail.

I'm not familiar with that mirror and that directory.I would guess
it's not an official backport to potato hence the problems.The official
place to look would be http://people.debian.org/~branden/
There is also an x-mailing list at lists.debian.org.You can post a
question there
and ask to be cc'ed since you're not subscribed.And ofcourse the
debian-user list.
