/etc/modules: Contains the names of the modules that will be loaded at
startup

/etc/modules.conf: Contains the settings of your modules (like Irqs and IOs
for isa cards for example)

To change /etc/modules.conf it is recommended to edit the corresponding file
in /etc/modutils and
then run 'update-modules'.

As for the USB features you compiled them into the kernel so it will load
all it can...

There is a really good 'Linux USB guide' at http://www.sourceforge.net
Just make a search for it...It clarified a lot of things. Well for me at
least =)
