Morning Frank,
As someone who hires tech folks, and makes recommendation for clients
looking to hire/sub-crontract people in the IT arena, here's my two
cents...
- understand Linux. I don't care what distro. If someone can
adminsitrate a Debian system, odds are they have a slightly better
skillset that someone who can only use RedHat. Don't tie yourself to one
distro.
- understand UNIX. Try and master another flavor of UNIX. SCO, Solaris,
AIX, *BSD, etc.
- MSCE = means nothing. That's not to say it's a waste of money, but I
have NEVER hired anyone just because they had their MSCE.
- experience is worth more than paper. This is changing though. More and
more companies want to see that piece of paper.
- make it clear on your resume what your prefer to work with. i.e.:
Programming, Security, Networks, WebMaster, Systems Admin, etc...
- get a good working grasp of PC <-> UNIX. Learn how to mix Windows and
UNIX machines. Samba, VMWare, NFS, NIS. Odds are you will end up having
to deal with people who use Windows and they don't care how much UNIX
skills you have if they can't log into their NT Domain.
So to answer your question, I'd pick someone with Debian experience over
RedHat.

Stormix over Corel or redhat?', is quoted as:
