Prepare your upgrade by reading the relevant docs and the mail-list
archive.

XFree86 -configure
will generate the file XF86Config-4
this should be enough,if not you can rely on xf86config.

Anyway,I find it quite simple this way
apt-get (--reinstall) install task-x-window-system
use the --reinstall switch only if you alreafy have the task.
this will remove gdm since task-x depends on xdm so I just reinstalled
it
which will remove xdm and the task-x but that doesn't matter since the
actual
task is just an empty package.
Oh,yes and subscribe to debian-user ,it's a great mailing list,a bit
busy but...
