Did you use apt to install kde2??
I have done this on many occasions without any problems
whatsoever? That's the beauty of debian. If you want to compile
from source, so be it, but you're right, you can do that on any other
machine. If you don't want to have to bother with compiling from
source, then debian is the best bet as apt takes care of installing
packages and all their dependencies.
I came into the kde2 questions a bit late but it seems as if you've
been trying to install it from source. I just want to ask why?
Or am I wrong? (Don't have time at the moment to look at the
archives to see what's all involved, sorry.)

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a
look that says, 'My God, you're right! I never would've thought of that!'"
