Also, I'm not sure what you're doing about the kernel upgrade.
I've done that, too, on a few occasions and haven't run into any
problems. Really. And I'm not very computer literate... at least
compared to many on this list. Most of my knowledge about linux
and computers in general comes from this list.
I'm a radio producer with no coursework whatsoever in computers
and find it interesting the problems you've been having with both
kde2 and a kernel upgrade.
I have a hard time helping people with problems that are really
technical because I simply don't know the answers. But I follow
the directions/tips very carefully before I do anything and that has
worked 100% of the time. Kernel 2.4 and kde2 (and, at times,
Nautilus/Ximian Gnome1.4beta) running smoothly at home!
Sure, BSDs are nice in a way, but that's a different animal. I also
use netbsd on another machine and I like it but not for anything in
particular. Just for the adventure.
But Debian and BeOS are on my main box and that's primarily
what I use because they are the most useable and make the most
sense to me.

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a
look that says, 'My God, you're right! I never would've thought of that!'"
