You have to install the -devel packages.
apt-cache search devel | grep x | grep dev
will list a pretty narrowed down list for x related packages.
Also you can use tasksel together with the above method.
make sure you run
apt-get update dselect
before running tasksel
You have to install the dev packages for the needed libraries as well.
say your porgram yoiu ahve to compile needs glut
apt-cache search glut will reveal a glut3g-dev.That's what you need to
compile
against glut.
Compiling xapps from source will take a lot of space and time
installijng the needed libraries.

I'm sure Progeny has their own list seted up.Ask there since most of us
monitoring this list are still using Stormix or switched (back in my
case) to plain Debian unstable for a look at a new stuff and help with
testing.Every distro has it's own specifics and quirks and really it's
no general answer.Hands-on you can get to most of them but....
