List

This message below is highly important to this list. Great photos. Great
message. A good bit on the problems of making and using charcoal in cooking.

But I can't figure out how you can write something this lengthy and never get
in the concept of charcoal-making stoves!
No mention of some stove types being cleaner than others.
No mention of some stoves being an income earner.
No mention of some stoves being able to use small-sized non-wood residues -
with most not able to do so
No mention that some famous scientists worrying about excess atmospheric carbon
and who have endorsed placing char in soil

A fter writing the above, I searched for other types of stoves in the text -
and also found nothing specfic (Rockets, Jikos, etc.) So I confess to being
paranoid on this topic. Maybe the playing field is still level. Here's hoping .

I recommend reading this. We need to be supportive.

To the Alliance’s Partners, Donors and Friends:

Radha's Message

This month I'm especially pleased to share with you the release of Igniting
Change: A Strategy for Universal Adoption of Clean Cookstoves and Fuels . This
report reflects the tremendous time, effort and contributions that our
partners, Working Group co-chairs and members, the Alliance Secretariat, the
United Nations Foundation team, and especially Leslie Cordes and Amy Sticklor,
put into making this report a reality. It's a comprehensive and clear vision
for transforming the sector and affirming our creed that 'cooking shouldn't
kill'. As you'll see, a major international media outlet has already written
about the Alliance and the report! report photo

The Alliance teamed up this month with the Global Coalition against Child
Pneumonia to raise awareness around World Pneumonia Day, and Julia Roberts
spoke out about this biggest killer of children under the age of five. As many
of you are aware, almost half of the two million people who die annually from
diseases related to toxic cookstove smoke are children who die of acute lower
respiratory infections, most commonly pneumonia.

Also in this issue we highlight two new studies from the Guatemala RESPIRE
project run by the University of California, Berkeley, that are strengthening
the evidence base for links between pneumonia and toxic cookstove smoke in
children under age 5, as well as documenting startling new data regarding
cognitive impacts from prenatal smoke exposure in children ages 6 and 7.

Lastly, no newsletter would be complete without a story from the field. This
month we learn about the work of one of our partners in the Philippines, whose
clean and affordable cookstove is really making a difference in the lives of
women in that country.

Sincerely,

Radha Muthiah, Executive Director
