Subject: Re: [Stoves] Using TLUD and other chars for water treatment in
developing communities:

Paul - we will look at N-speciation in our sorption experiments and let you
know. We will most likely also be doing some work with gas phase uptake by
biochars. This work is an offshoot of our grant from the Gates Foundation
("Reinvent The Toilet Challenge"). We should have some interesting and
hopefully insightful results to share and discuss in the coming weeks/months.

I have some rice husk gasifier char that was sent to me by a Stanford grad
student who was working in Vietnam some months ago - perhaps you met Ivy
Nguyen? I haven't gotten around to testing it yet, but we can most likely
incorporate it into our experimental matrix. I'd love to have a 150 gasifier if
you are willing to send me one.

Josh,

Also I am curious to know which form of N is best sorbed by biochar: urea,
ammonia, ammonium, nitrate ...

Does N have to be in a liquid or gaseous state for the best result?

Since rice hulls are so available and cheap here in Asia,
I would be delighted if you could run tests on rice hull biochar.
Would this be possible?
Can you access rice hulls?
If so, I will send you a 150 gasifier.

Imagine rice hull biochar loaded with N from human urine fed to cattle to
improve feed conversion and reduce methane.

Ha!
We're just starting up some batch tests to quantify uptake of N, P, and K from
urine.......

I'll make sure the results of these studies are accessible to the list.

Josh,

I really like what you say here.
The big challenge here is in examining the role of biochar in sorbing N from
human urine.

Many thanks.

Hi Crispin (et al.) -
We're just beginning to look at biochars in taste and odor control
applications. For instance my colleague found that forced draft 1-gal "Toucan"
TLUD chars are fairly effective for removing chlorine taste. (He observed in
villages in Peru that people would drink water known to be contaminated rather
than chlorinated water because of the taste, to which they are not desensitized
like we are in the US.)

We have an upcoming column study to look at removal of other common T&O
compounds, mainly MIB I think will turn out to be our focus compound as it's
difficult to sorb and is detectable by smell/taste as low as 10 ng/L (!).

Just hypothesizing at this point, but the trend seems to be that high
temperature, high-draft TLUD chars perform by far the best in most of our
applications of interest. Ballpark....about half as good as commercial
bituminous activated carbon. They also do not leach native organic matter into
water, which is nice (in contrast to low temperature chars that will undergo
some initial leaching).

So I woud encourage you to try a good high-draft TLUD char in your boiling
water - it might make a noticeable difference. Sorption kinetics are sped up by
elevated temperature, so that may help as well (?). But I have not directly
experimented with this myself.

Dear Josh (is he subscribed?)

Great article. Having gone to Africa in 1977 to build rural water supply
systems I appreciate the usefulness of the system you have created. I have on
question you might be able to answer.

If I boil water in a container that has some char in it, will it help in any
manner? Is it worth putting some into the container?

I was wondering if the processing temperature might have to be above a certain
value to get a taste-free result. Ideas? Experiences?

Thanks
Crispin

FYI we had an article published last month on using TLUD and other chars for
water treatment in developing communities:
