Dear Paul I guess that what I was trying to suggest in a simple way is that you are not dealing with a simple problem. What you are dealing with is "3 dimensional unsteady state heat transfer through beds of irregularly sized broken solids, with irregular shape factors, changing size, and changing state."

Kevin, Note that I used the phrase "sufficiently uniform". I have experimented with several forms of loose biomass in no way as uniform as rice hulls, such as coffee husks. Some work quite nicely. But I would not venture a guess about the wooden spheres you describe. I like to see a certain resistance to air or gas flow. We can't say much until we run tests. Thanks. Ron, In a TLUD it's all about the uniformity of air flow. If corn cobs were cut to the same length, they just might be sufficiently uniform. # I think it is a bit more complex that "unifiorm length." With a given species of fuel, I think it is more a relation of relative size (that would determine pressure drop and uniformity of flow across the fuel bed), and surface area and diameter of the fuel particle. (That will have a large impact on fuel burning characteristics.) For example, consider a TLUD running on wood spheres of say 1/4" daimeter, and 1" diameter. Such stoves would have quite different operating characteristics. Best wishes, Kevin Thanks. Paul Olivier On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 1:54 AM, Ronal W.
