Hi Christa

Its shocking that GTZ doesn't do simple fact checks on their videos.

The very first piece of informationn on the video is that there are 170
billion tons of wood produced annually on a global basis. This number
didn't make any sense to me. I thought that's about 20-25 tons per person
globally.. Then why is the world deforesting so badly?

So if you look at these numbers you find annual terrestrial biomass is about
132 billion tons and less than 1/2 of that is woody and its all already
pretty much appropriated by humans. That's why we have global deforestation
happening!.

GTZ should be investing in research and development of non woody biomass as
a global solution to the deforesation of the worlds forests. Its simply
shocking in 2010 that GTZ would put their name on something which begins
with a premise that are are 170 billion tons of wood produced .....and goes
on to say lets use and grow more wood and export wood from africa.

I am simply amazed.

Future

The GTZ HERA -- Poverty Oriented Basic Energy Services Programme has
produced and put together an audio slideshow which promotes the idea of wood
energy as a modern and potentially renewable source of energy.
It shows examples from different countries where wood is sustainably
produced and processed efficiently for energy purposes.
The sustainable production of wood as a renewable energy source has huge
potential for Africa. The afforestation of degraded landscapes,
establishment of wood plantations and the sustainable management of natural
forests can all serve to increase energy security, provide access to energy
and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

The link on YouTube is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMPaTPjvAy0

Very useful for lobbying purposes in favor of renewable wood energy.

enjoy the show, Christa
