Crispin,
There are about 20 generically different hand presses out there to date but
thus far production averages about20 to 30 kg per person per day. We are coming
out with a relatively novel design which far in away exceeds this output but it
is more for emergency releif or the more urban populations.
However, no matter what lind of press you've got, it is the steady supply of
peppery prepared feedstock that makes or breaks the enterprise. The bulk of
rural production uses the traditional mortar and pestle which while technically
effective, absorbs up to 70% of total production labor. Various hand cranked
threshers/ choppers/ tumblers absorb less in the 40 to 50% range but it is not
til you engage any of the globally ubiquitous hammermill that you begin to see
real increases in production. But few have the capital for such equipment
amongst the mass population ?There is a huge need for efficient, simple and
rugged material processing technologies
