The purpose of satire is to provoke, not assuage. People are going to be
offended in satire. Period. The fact is, offense is the point. This was not
harmful or destructive, in any event, except, perhaps in an overreaching
stereotype linking SUV drivers to neo-fascism, hardly a universal condition
- for which Rob Scarlett has apologized..

Aside from the fact that this matter has gone off the St. Paul topic, the
basic message is that satire does have a berth in the marketplace of ideas
and that satire is going to offend. That's its effectiveness and its
durability as political commentary (witness Alice in Wonderland, Gulliver's
Travels and most of Shakespeare's comedies).

Back to St. Paul.
