Post news and information from your neighborhood: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _________________________________________ Well, if ever there was a mischaracterization of a position, it is Renee's of Rob Scarlett's. Utterly wrong. Talk about reading into a piece that said nothing about all stadium supporters. Rob's satire was on the money - until he got to the SUV-fascist connection. For that he's apologized. The rest of this is concocted out of whole cloth.
I find it distressing that people prone to scream racism, sexism, stereotyping, etc., are often themselves twisting the truth as they present it. Stereotypes are real definitions of real people, places, and things extrapolated to cover all members of a similar group. Stereotypes are the very real fodder of satire stretched to the absurd, of course, meaning the stereotypes dissolve - as they should - in the absurdity of the humor. Harmful, destructive and similar perceptions are, in cases like this, attributes found in the mind of the beholder and there simply is no way to please everyone. That we must laugh at ourselves is critical to cultural stability. Absent that, we fall into unnecessary conflict. There are harmful and destructive applications of stereotypes, but satire is hardly one of them.
