The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air-pollution health alert for the Twin Cities, Rochester and southern Minnesota for today and Friday. It said a combination of a low-level temperature inversion and changing wind patterns has produced unhealthy levels of soot in the air. The Air Quality Index, an indicator of pollutant levels, early today was 107 in the Twin Cities and 111 in Rochester. A level of 100 and above is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, which include those with heart or lung disease, including asthma; adults over 50, and healthy adults and children engaged in heavy exercise. The MPCA recommended those people postpone or reduce heavy or prolonged exertion. Most of Iowa is in the unhealthy range, and the forecast indicates the southern half of Minnesota will remain in that range until Friday night. The MPCA said some of the soot has local sources and some of it is blowing into Minnesota from states to the south. The agency is asking people to take any of several steps to reduce the problem. They include limiting driving and delaying any fires that produce soot or fine particles.
