SAY IT AINT SO, JOE !! Mayor Heeds the Call

Less than one week after announcing its mission to put the question of stadium financing on the ballot in St. Paul 'SAY IT AIN'T SO, JOE !!" is claiming victory in at least getting stadium proponents to heed its core message. "We are determined that the voters of St. Paul are going to have their say on this before any public monies are committed" declared Patrick Hill, one of the organizers of "SAY IT AIN'T SO, JOE!!" (SIASJ).

"It is no accident that Deputy Mayor Flaherty's concession to submit the question to the voters came only days after news of our campaign began circulating at city hall" noted Hill. "However, this is by no means the end of our effort. The real questions are still ahead. What will the ballot question say and when will it be asked. Those are absolutely critical to the process. Our language will be revealed soon. Perhaps then the city council will adopt it unanimously and we can forego the process of collecting the signatures altogether."

Hill noted SIASJ disappointment with the St. Paul gambit to - in baseball parlance - "fast pitch" the voters. "Stadium proponents attempted this same tactic at the legislature in 2002" claimed Hill. "We were up there advocating for a public say and were completely stonewalled in committees until Governor Ventura publicly stated his insistence the people get a chance to vote. Then suddenly all was candy and flowers with the proponents who tried to claim they were for it all along. It was a little like seeing the 'hidden ball' trick attempted. by a fielder. 'Nope, I don't have it. What's in my other hand, you ask ? Oh, there it is ! Sorry.' I would have hoped they were sincere then when they said the voters should have a vote but we learned right away this year they didn't really mean it ."

" One has to ask, why are the teams and the proponents so anxious to prevent the voters in the game? The reason is clear. They know how that outing ends. Their team loses." predicted Hill.

"We're happy to get their attention so soon." said Hill "but its only the first inning. We're not leaving the field this time until the game is over."
