Howdy,

I'm mostly a lurker on this forum since I spend my work day staring into a
monitor (web programmer/librarian) and have not the eye strength to engage in
drawn out typing matches.

I work regularly with St. Paul school kids as a volunteer though the
Sibley Bike Depot (www.bikeped.org). We teach mechanics/shop skills to work
study students, the St. Paul Connections program, random drop ins, and have
partnered with numerous charter schools over the years. I very much support
non-traditional education options. Just because many of us on this list likely
could not get our heads out of books as kids does not mean that all munchkins
learn through reading.

I am also a product of St. Paul schools (Horace Mann/Highland '86), with the
exception of one year when I attended Minnehaha Academy in Mpls. Having
attended both private and public school I can say from experience that you can
get a great education at either- if you have supportive parents, the will to
learn, and engage oneself in the culture of the institution (i.e. debate, drama,
student council, band...). Kids who go home and flop in front of the TV learn
an apathy which may poison them into adulthood. As budget cuts constrict after
school programming, we all have the responsibility to create constructive
evening activities for kids.
