On the national level the role and aim of corporate america is much more obvious - cut taxes, increase military spending, create deficits then attack social programs as being unaffordable. We have had 12 years of this with reagan and bush the first - bush the second seems intent on outdoing all past efforts. But the same effort happens locally. Cut taxes (or return surpluses) , create deficits, cut state contribution to local aid and starve public institutions. Libraries, parks, schools are then underfunded. Corporations will come to the aid of the parks by posting advertising in the parks and on public golf courses. Corporations will come to the aid of schools by contracting for pouring rights. The effort is nothiing less than a corporate invasion and degradation of that which is generally thought of as a city's public assets, assets bought and paid for by many past generations. Unfortuantely, some local officials are evidently closer to corporate interests than loyal to the intent and purposes of past generations.
Scenic Minnesota and Scenic Saint Paul agressively fought against advertising in saint paul parks - we lost, I believe by a vote (3-4). We should revisit that issue.
You hear about privitization - well advertising in parks is the the camel's nose in the tent - call it privitzation light. And understand that privitization is the goal and creating deficits is the means to that goal. By the way privitization is the ONLY reason we are in Iraq.

Re: the funding of cities by corporations and the
consequent "naming rights". I think that it behooves
us to pay very close attention, think and talk
about what we want to see in terms of the policies
that run our city and the impact that those policies
have on the relationship of the citizen and the city. I also think that the very thing that is happening,
evidently, according to the piece about L.A., is not
that far away here in St. Paul. It is trying to get a
start in Parks and Rec policy. They have a new program posted on their web site
called Park Sponsers, which states that a business can
give an amount of money and will get a sign posted in
a park. Now I have tried to get more information
about this by calling the number listed and so far
have found no one that seems to know anything about it
and no one who can tell me how much money gets a
business the sign, whether or not the business chooses
the park or not. But the idea is there, alive and
well, on the web site. Personally, the vision of my
local park becoming an advertising site for business
is a repellent one. Sue Conner, St. Anthony Park
