Index of SPPS Budget Discussion http://www.e-democracy.org/stpaul/spps-posts.html _________________________________________ Taking Sue's comment one step further. If the majority of citizens want this or that service provided by its local or statewide government, someone has to pay for it. If you aren't willing to pay taxes than you are left with using alternative methods such as naming right. Frankly I think even if we went with naming rights, the namers would eventually have to cut their budgets and drop their sponsorship of this or that park or city. So we would be back to square one. Why not admit it. It the service provides a service it needs to be paid for with tax dollars.
Re: the funding of cities by corporations and the consequent "naming rights". I think that it behooves us to pay very close attention, think and talk about what we want to see in terms of the policies that run our city and the impact that those policies have on the relationship of the citizen and the city. I also think that the very thing that is happening, evidently, according to the piece about L.A., is not that far away here in St. Paul. It is trying to get a start in Parks and Rec policy. They have a new program posted on their web site called Park Sponsers, which states that a business can give an amount of money and will get a sign posted in a park. Now I have tried to get more information about this by calling the number listed and so far have found no one that seems to know anything about it and no one who can tell me how much money gets a business the sign, whether or not the business chooses the park or not. But the idea is there, alive and well, on the web site. Personally, the vision of my local park becoming an advertising site for business is a repellent one.
