Carl Pohlad and the Twins organization would prefer that a new stadium
for
the Twins be built in Minneapolis.
However Minneapolis city officials were not demonstarting a sufficient
level
of urgency about putting together a funding proposal for the stadium.
Minneapolis city officials are also hindered by the fact that any
financing
proposal that requires the city to spend $10 million or more must be
approved by the taxpayers in a referendum.
The Twins courtship with St Paul is disingenuous.
In my opinion the only way the Twins end up in St. Paul is if
Minneapolis
fails to put together a financing package that is acceptable to the
Twins.
The threat of moving to St.Paul is simply leverage used by the Twins
during
the negotiations with Minneapolis and the state legislature.
I would suggest elected officials begin deliberations to craft a stadium
financing package that relies primarily on private financing. Look to
Major
League Baseball, team owners, players, and baseball fans to provide the
funding source for building a new stadium
Let the working families of Minnesota spend the money they earn as they
wish. It is irresponsible for state officials to allow competeting
Minnesota communities to be pitted against each other in a escalating
bidding war to land a baseball stadium. The only party that benefits
from a
bidding war is the seller of the coveted item. The legislature should
be
looking to secure the best possible deal for the taxpayers of Minnesota
if
they venture into crafting a stadium funding proposal for the Twins.
The most important factor to consider in any funding proposal is the
ratio
of private vs public investment. Neither of the proposals from St.
Paul
or Minneapolis as they now stand meet this guiding principle in my
opinion.

The flowery quotes that some folks attach to thier
signatures usually make me gag..but here I go.

A letter to the editor published in Sunday's Pioneer Press was written
by
John Wolf who is identified as the owner of Dixie's on Grand. In the
letter
Mr. Wolf states:
"Being part of the bar and restaurant scene in St. Paul, we also are
willing
to help pay the price and see the proposed 3 percent tax as both fair
and
wise."
I also am part of the bar and restaurant scene in St. Paul as a
customer,
and I feel the 3 percent tax is neither fair nor wise. So to Mr.
Wolf
(who resides in Eagan by the way) who wants to raise St. Paul's bar
and
restaurant tabs to fund a stadium for the Twins I say "Fine". I'll do
my
drinking and eating at establishments that aren't so willing to allow
their
patrons to be fleeced.
Starting today and continuing until the stadium debate has concluded I
am
starting my own boycott of bars and restaurant owners that want to pad
my
bill to fund a stadium. To Dixie's on Grand goes the honor of being at
the
top of my list followed by Fabulous Fern's on Selby Ave owned by
Charles
Senkler. This month's issue of Avenues reports that Mr. Senkler is
one of
the leaders of the pro-stadium effort. Now if I could just find out
who
the other 68 bar and restaurant owners are that the stadium and sales
tax
package I could complete my list.
To parapharase Mr. Wolf "Let's hear from the customers and debate this
issue out in the open."

First thanks to Mr Swope for his finding interesting tidbits of news.
In a story in the Strib
DOWNTOWN HOTELS - Low Occupancy Rates In St. Paul:
http://www.startribune.com/stories
/462/4661327.html
(Next to last story on page)
While probably not something of Great Importance or an earth
shakingly monumentally large problem, I find a number of
irregularities in the article and just have to comment.
"Downtown St. Paul hasn't added hotel beds in more than 20 years"
If I remember right the number of rooms available at the now Town
Square Raddison were increased when it was renovated as was the
Rivertfront Raddison. Well within the last 10 years.
"As St. Paul ........., its hotels are aging, "
What about the renovation of the hotel across the street from the NHL
Stadium? I just read in the Pioneer Press a story about how the St
Paul Hotel is going through a multi-million $$ renovation, one of
many over the past couple of decades. The former Holiday Inn (Now
Town Square Raddison) was totally renovated when it was re-opened
within the last 5-10 years. The Embasy Suits has also had a number
of renovations over the past 10 years as it changed names back and
forth. The Riverfront Raddison has had a number of renovations in
the past 5-10 years.
"Nearly half of the rooms sat unused in 2003, according to industry
studies."
This does surprise me, I thought since the NHL, and all the Rock
Concerts at the Stadium and the former Day's Inn getting all Swanky,
that things were just rockin and rollin in the Hospitality Industry
in DT. I guess things aren't so rosey, but then the writer of the
story got so much else wrong, who is to say what the truth is.

John Birrenbach

"Ethanol plant fire extinguished
DENNIS GALE
Associated Press
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A year ago - March 15, 2003 - farmer-investors
and officials gathered at the grand opening of Chancellor's $52
million Great Plains Ethanol Plant.
Sunday morning, firefighters rushed to the plant to extinguish a fire."
"Not a good way to celebrate our anniversary, but we'll fix it and go
on," Rick Serie, the plant's general manager, said Sunday."
Maybe not for the plant manager and owners, but certainly for the
surrounding environment.
http://www.ksfy.com/Global/story.asp?S=1709715&nav=0w0jLW9O
"over 150 firefighters were called to a fire at the Great Plains
Ethanol"
But according to GSE plant Management, whoever they are today they
shift plant CEO's like most people change socks lately, we don't need
to worry about GSE. They have complete confidence in the St Paul
Fire Department responding properly.
Well I agree I would expect them to respond properly too, but the
fact is that is AFTER THE FACT. You really need to see the
Firefighter side of the story
http://www.keloland.com/NewsDetail9.cfm?Id=22,30643
"Firefighters React To Ethanol Fire
This kind of fire call is one that raises questions for local fire
departments.
Tea Assistant Fire Chief Grant Vanriesen says, "When you think of the
ethanol plant and something of that scale, are we prepared? You start
to think about fire flows."
As firefighters pulled into the Great Plains Ethanol plant, they saw
the flames, and knew they were in for a long fight."
Ya just have to love ETHANOL PLANTS they are such wonderfully great
things to have a block away. Do we have 150 firefighter in the St
Paul Department?
