in the Pioneer Press Tuesday, Bill Salisbury wrote, “Like Saul on the road to Damascus, Gov. Tim Pawlenty has seen the light on the need to build new professional sports stadiums.”

I find no biblical indication of Saul’s views on professional sports stadiums. Given that the new stadiums of his time such as the Coliseum in Rome were also used to literally throw Christians to the lions, I find it hard to believe that he would have favored them. Still the Coliseum has been used for two millennia as a stadium, fortress, quarry and tourist attraction and so has produced a good return on investment. The Metodome has been used for two decades and is considered obsolete. One can only speculate how long the new stadiums would last.

I know not if Pawlenty’s conversion was like Saul’s religious in nature. Perhaps it was, but perhaps it was only political expediency. Time will tell.
