Index of SPPS Budget Discussion http://www.e-democracy.org/stpaul/spps-posts.html _________________________________________ I think the issue of Gay Marriage is definitely a local issue, as we are witnessing all across the country.
Saint Paul can take one of three routes on this issue. We can remain silent and say, "It's not our concern, marriage is an issue to be decided by the legislature." We can take the approach of that county in Georgia, that last week talked about banning homosexual behavior, (either they don't get modern media down there and hadn't heard about the Supreme Court's decision in Lawrence v. Texas last year or they don't believe that Supreme Court rulings apply down there). Or we take the third route, like San Francisco, Portland and New Paltz, New York have done and what we have done as a city in the past. We can say yes to civil rights, yes to equality, yes we are a progressive, tolerant city that believes in equal rights for all. There are now two camps in this country. One led by people who stand up for civil rights, equality and tolerance and another camp, led by President Bush and the "Christian Right", who want to be mean-spirited, divide us on the basis of sexual orientation, deny basic human rights to others and attempt to use the issue of other people's rights as a wedge issue in the election this year. It is times like this, we can remain silent or we can speak out. I say hooray for Dave Thune. Once again he has shown that he is not afraid to take a stand and lead our city. I hope that the City Council will unanimously pass Dave's resolution on Wednesday and the entire City Council stands by Mayor Kelly when he signs it. This is a chance for St. Paul to be a leader and say we stand for equality, justice and fairness for all. I hope that we grab this opportunity.
